Two up front out of Valencia, Sakho & Carroll.

For me: Valencia and Sakho. Carroll on the bench for when we need to chase a game.

The benefit of these two being Downing then dictates the play.

Just my opinion.

Looks as if Carroll may be out injured for a bit now (BFS said in post match interview that they will know early next week) so perhaps this is a chance for Sakho & Valencia to rekindle their partnership (and fuck Nolan off!!!!!!!)

I'm not convinced, seeing as he started there against Hull as well. I just don't understand it, EVERYONE can see it other than him. And when he did see it in the first half at Hull, he claimed a tactical masterstroke in changing it. Yet he's since done exactly the same thing again.

The mind boggles sometimes.

Yeah, I don't know. I would hope we could play with Downing at the tip even if Nolan was playing like we did earlier. My hope is that today Downing was on the wing for defensive purposes today.

I don't dislike Carroll at all, I actually really rate the bloke. I actually like Carroll and Sakho as a front two, a lot. But Carroll always seems to go hand in hand with Nolan. I don't see how he could possibly warrant the inclusion of Nolan if we had Sakho and Valencia up front, and if that means Carroll being on the bench then I'd take it.

When Sakho and Carroll have been able to play together I don't think that has been the case. (The second half in the first game against Swansea comes to mind.) I would agree with your statement if it was about Nolan.

I wouldn't necessarily disagree Ron, but the whole dynamic of the team changes when Carroll is up there. We're so much better to watch with Downing at the top of the diamond and Sakho and Valencia running things up front.

I did not see anything from Valencia today that allows me to agree with that.

Carroll started a beautiful move that he absolutely wasted in the first half for instance.

Despite his recent goals, could today be a blessing in disguise if Valencia and Sakho are reunited for the next few games? Would love to see these two together against Man Utd next week.

Allardyce is a conservative manager by nature, I think if he took the handbrake off we could be having a historic season but unfortunately its just not in his nature.

I have to say i agree with nicey on this.

As i said I'm a fan of carroll, but the team played much better as a unit before he came back.

I agree he's good at what he does and is v good defending. But I'd rather see valencia and sakho terrorising defences with their pace, with carroll coming on as a plan b.
I think with him in the team The temptation to go long is too much sometimes and we drop too deep.
